This craftsman-built secluded log cabin rental is located at Mile 6 of Mud Bay Road, on Paradise Cove, overlooking the Chilkat Inlet, Rainbow Glacier and Davidson Glacier.
Paradise West was in the West family for over 50 years. This Alaskan wilderness log cabin was hand-built in 1983 by Haines resident and artisan John Carlson, for Chuck West. Chuck is well known throughout Alaska as the father of Alaska tourism, and was widely referred to as “Mr. Alaska”. This was Chuck’s treasured spot, his favored personal hideaway. No one knew Alaska like Chuck West, and of the whole big state, this was his special spot. The view of Rainbow Glacier from our cabin is inspiring and breathtaking. Your visit here will not only afford you spectacular views from the spacious waterfront cabin and broad deck, but will also put you in touch with a slice of Alaska history. Local art and carefully chosen mementos highlight this unique home in this idyllic spot.
The new owners of Paradise West are continually improving the property by renovating the kitchen and bathroom, adding a romantic yurt accommodation and honoring the original vision of Chuck West. Chuck West originally envisioned a very rustic place, with no modern conveniences. Over time, it has been modernized, but it is still a wilderness retreat, and the modern conveniences have their limitations. We hope you will embrace those limitations as part of the experience of the true Alaska wilderness and the unique nature of this special place. Unplug, watch the bald eagles soar by. If you wander the property, you may spot the bald eagle nest far up in a towering spruce tree.
Paradise West is an open-plan cabin with a part curtained off master bedroom with a king-size bed, plus an open loft with two twins beds that can be made into a king. There is also a queen hide-a-bed sofa in the living area. We have added a private and romantic yurt on our property, perfect for a couple who wants some privacy and distance from the cabin. The view of the famous Rainbow Glacier is awe-inspiring from both the yurt and the cabin.
While remote, the cabin does have city electricity and indoor plumbing: a shower, toilet and sink, all with non-potable water. We provide 15 gallons of drinking water for your arrival. The jugs may be refilled at the local spring. The kitchen has a refrigerator-freezer, electric range/oven, toaster, coffee maker, and blender. The kitchen is completely stocked with dishes, glasses, flatware, pots, pans and all you need for meal preparation. There is even a barbeque on the deck. An oil heater will keep you warm if needed. Wi-fi for email checking, DVD player, stereo, and phone for local calls only.
Relish the peace and solitude of your private wilderness retreat. Climb down the hand-hewn steps and trail to the beach below the cabin to enjoy a waterfront bonfire or beachcombing. Enjoy the many attractions and activities Haines offers: drive a short way to the Chilkat State Park; go fishing, hiking, bird-watching; or comb the local art galleries for a special piece to take home. This is truly a unique place, steeped in the history, beauty and wilderness for which Alaska is famous.
